Laurie Smart grew up in New Hampshire as an only child with her mother and NH State Trooper father. She served four years in the US Air Force with her first six months working with a recruiter before her active-duty responsibilities started.
Her first assignment was in Germany where she worked in an Air Force Squadron as an orderly room clerk for two and a half years and then finished her assignment at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, TX in a Pilot Training Squadron. After her time in the military, she received a degree in Theology and Secretarial Sciences from Dallas Bible College, worked at Dallas Theological Seminary and various other jobs in the Dallas area. Laurie worked at a computer company for eight years and then finished her career in 2020 with an environmental services company after 18.5 years as a front desk receptionist using her skills as a “people person”.
Laurie’s kidney disease was diagnosed in 1993 from uncontrolled and undiagnosed diabetes. She started hemodialysis in 2020, which has left her fatigued and pretty much held captive to her home. Her cat, Calico Rose, has been her constant companion and her church family have been her help and support.
With a new kidney, Laurie will find the strength to become more active in her church and community. Laurie has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in her outreach to find her life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
A healthy person can live a normal life with one kidney and save this Veteran's life! Please click on the link below if you would like to learn more OR call (551) 233-1611. Thank you.
