John Jayroe, Jr started in the ROTC program at Clemson University taking computer engineering courses for three years before his active-duty service started in 1987. He belonged to a Field Artillery Unit in the fire direction center relaying accurate firing data to the guns until his honorable discharge in 1989.
John took a job with TCI Cable, which is now Xfinity, received a bachelor’s degree in computer systems at City University of Seattle and worked in a FedEx Copy Store for a few years. He moved on to work in the Tacoma Library system as a page and ended up at American Lake VA in Tacoma as Assistant to the Director. Due to his increasing health issues, John needed to stop working in 1999.
At the age of 30, John was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and nearly died. He now battles Type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease and has been reliant on dialysis since March 2021. He has been struggling with extreme fatigue and mobility issues caused by his blood pressure dropping when he stands.
John and Angela have been married for 27 years and are a great support to each other. He enjoys watching cooking shows and trying out new recipes whenever he can, with steaks, cabbage and sausage being some of his signature items. He would love to return to swimming and potentially participate in some sports he grew up playing – basketball, football, and track and field. Angela is a cancer survivor and has been medically ruled out to donate. They are hopeful someone will be the answer to their prayers. Will you consider sharing John’s story or even consider becoming a kidney donor, he really wants to be able to chase Angela again?
John has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in his outreach to find his life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
