STATUS:

Received 4/18/2024 Pittsburgh VA

Jeffrey Garcia Sr. is a Veteran who served 26 years in the US Army. His service to his country and his dedication to Veterans has continued in his work as a nurse in the Mental Health Services Department at Cleveland VA Medical Center.

Jeffrey was deployed several times to Iraq. He understands the emotional toll of deployments. He feels especially qualified and dedicated to supporting other Veterans who are living with with PTSD.

Jeffrey has continued his nursing work at the VA despite having end stage kidney disease. Over the past 5 years, Jeffrey has relied on a dialysis machine to survive. The years on dialysis are starting to take a toll. Jeffrey is on the wait list to receive a kidney transplant. However the wait for a kidney from a deceased donor could take many more years.

DOVE Team #37 took place at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center! With the help of his family, reporter Mike Holden, and the Army Ranger community, Jeffrey had many prospective anonymous donors come forward, but it was his cousin, Alicia, who was cleared first!

Alicia is a mom, a grandmom, and a teacher. She traveled from Ohio to Pittsburgh to undergo testing and this surgery. She is looking forward to Jeffrey feeling restored and leaving behind five years of chronic dialysis.
