Waiting

Glen Hopkins is a US Navy Veteran who served four years on the USS Halsey (CG-23), a guided missile cruiser, as an electrician working on the ship’s motors and motor controllers. He was stationed at Naval Base San Diego, and spent time in the Western Pacific countries of the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and Singapore, but he really liked Hong Kong.

After his honorable discharge in 1986, Glen went to Coyne Institute to learn residential electric and after graduating worked for a company before joining the Local134 IBEW Union. He chose residential work and kept busy for nine years but had already been diagnosed with CKD. In 1988 he received his first kidney transplant, which lasted 12 years before Glen’s body began rejecting it. Unfortunately, the Union decided to lay him off in 2001, coinciding with 9/11 attacks and the slowing of the economy.

Glen’s sister Jean and her husband Gerry are a great support for him, and he is happy his 91-year-old mother is still in good health, so they can stay connected. He can no longer go roller-skating but he still enjoys playing pool and card games. In 2006, Glen found himself back on dialysis and has been relying on it for 18 years! He says he prays a lot, has a very upbeat outlook on life, and is thankful that his body has been able to endure this long, but he would love to be independent of the many hours a week being hooked up to a machine. Will you help Glen be free from years of health challenges, to live a normal life again, and have his prayers for a second transplant answered? Please share his story with others or consider giving him the gift of life.

Glen has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in his outreach to find his life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.

A healthy person can live a normal life with one kidney and save this Veteran's life! Please click on the link below if you would like to learn more OR call 551-233-1611.
