My name is Troy Gravel, and I served in the US Air Force as a 3C031 Communications Computer Systems Operator. I managed the base mainframe and local area network, facilitating high-speed print jobs for Dover Air Force Base. I was an E3 at the time I left the military, and I enjoyed working with computer systems and living on a base of C5 Galaxy cargo planes.
After the military, I was an Information Technology Managed Services Provider for most of my career, as well as a Network Consultant and Cabling Technician. I traveled up and down the East Coast, providing installation and support for POS (Point of Sale) customers in the fast food and casual dining restaurant businesses to many companies too numerous to name. I provided global support to one of the largest forklift manufacturers in the world out of Greenville, NC, working for NACCO Materials Handling Group—specifically, Hyster/Yale Forklifts.
I am no longer working in that industry, as I decided to focus on my health. I am semi-retired and currently work as a trip driver for Cyr Bus Company, driving sports teams to away games for multiple schools. I became a bus driver when I started coaching high school soccer in North Carolina. When I moved to Maine, I continued coaching and driving teams. I no longer coach, but to stay connected to sports, I continue to drive, which allows me the time to go to my many doctors’ appointments. Staying connected to sports and knowing kids are getting to play for their respective schools is what gives me satisfaction every day.
I have PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and have known about it since 2014. I am currently in Stage 5, with a GFR of 14, and thankfully I am not on dialysis yet—however, I was told it could be one to three years away. I currently do not have any physical limitations; however, due to the disease, I cannot take any anti-inflammatory drugs, and as such, I have had a frozen shoulder and back problems that can only be handled with months of physical therapy. Still, I do not let this stop me.
My wonderful wife, Rose, and I have been married for almost 28 years, and we have one daughter, Kaitlyn, who is 26, and one grandson, Ethan, who is 18 months. I mentioned earlier that I enjoyed coaching soccer. My move to Maine was partly because I could no longer coach in the North Carolina heat due to my kidneys. I stopped coaching two years ago to completely focus on my kidneys and avoid even the minimal heat Maine has. I would love to get back to coaching, as I have coached middle and high school teams since 2012 and coached travel soccer since 2005.
