STATUS:
Received! Living Donor 2/13/24
Michael Hernandez is an Army Veteran who served 6 years active duty and 3 years in the Army Reserves. He is married to Jacqueline, a surgical technician, and is the proud dad of two children ages 18 and 16.
Currently, Michael works full time for the Army as a supply technician. It is getting increasingly difficult to maintain his work schedule due to the debilitating symptoms related to his kidney disease. Last September, Michael started home dialysis. Each night he must hook up to a machine for 10 hours. This machine keeps him alive. But he constantly feels fatigued and limited in what he can do.
Michael is only 39 years old. His best hope of living a normal life, free from dialysis is to get a kidney transplant. However the wait for a kidney from a deceased donor is over 5 years long. A living kidney donor would enable Michael to bypass that long wait. Living kidney donation is safe for donors who are medically cleared. The medical evaluation is covered by Michael's insurance. Organizations such as DOVE Transplant help to cover costs related to travel, lost wages for all donors.
Michael says "I want to make it to see my kids graduate - that would make my world".
