Retired Master Sergeant John Duncan spent six years serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and twenty-seven years in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard combined. He was active duty during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, was part of the 2001 Rescue and Recovery Operation at Ground Zero in NYC, and helped with security as Senior NCO for Alpine Venue at the 2002 Utah Winter Olympics. John’s last duty assignment was as the Battalion Operations Sergeant and Senior Enlisted Advisor for HQ 1st Battalion 169th Leadership Regiment.
After his retirement, John worked from 1977-2020 as an Engineering Inspector for Sub-Station Operations with Consolidated Edison of New York and as a High Voltage Electrician for the U.S. Department of the Interior from 2000-2007. He and his wife, Debbie, will be celebrating 34 years of marriage in December 2024. Their daughter, Danielle, is a tattoo artist, their son, James, works for the State Department, and they have two cats named Pepper and Sir Duncan the Brave Kitty.
After John received an ultrasound for a knee injury, it was discovered that he only had one kidney. He later developed hypertension, and his kidneys failed. John is not yet on dialysis and hopes it can stay that way. He belongs to a veteran snowboarding and skiing club, is Commandant of the Putnam County Marine Corps League, Commander of the Brewster American Legion, and President of the Brewster Lions Club. John has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in his outreach to find his life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
