STATUS:

Waiting

My name is Adam Christopher, and I was a Quartermaster (QM) in the Coast Guard. My primary duties were navigation, Deck Watch Officer, honors and ceremonies, and signaling. I was also a boarding team member who conducted numerous Maritime Law Enforcement inspections. I separated after 8 years of service as a 2nd Class Petty Officer (E-5). I was a member of Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA) during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF), where I received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for my actions. I enjoyed conducting Search and Rescue Missions (SAR), as well as enforcing fisheries laws to protect our vital resources derived from the territorial seas of the United States.

I have worked as an electrician and home repairman until recently, when I changed trades and became a Licensed Massage Therapist. I chose to be a massage therapist to be able to help others while allowing myself to work in a low-stress environment, which helps with the effects of living with chronic kidney disease. My desire and ability to be of service to others is a recurring theme in my work history and what ultimately gives me the most satisfaction.

I have known about my kidney disease since December 2016, when I was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). I am currently around 20% kidney function but have not been placed on dialysis yet (thankfully). My physical limitations mainly revolve around heat/dehydration and energy levels, so I am unable to physically exert myself like I could before kidney disease. I have to be very careful with heat exposure and hydration levels, as well as adhering to a strict low-potassium and low-sodium diet.

I am a 47-year-old father with a 9-year-old son named Benjamin. I also have a 25-year-old stepson named Damian, who is the father of my 1-year-old step-grandson, Luca. I enjoy being active with Benjamin and sharing with him my passions, which are surfing and disc golf. We also spend time practicing all ball sports, skateboarding, tree climbing, bike riding, and pretty much anything that involves being outside and physically moving our bodies.

After I receive a kidney transplant, I look forward to continuing all our current activities, without the limitations of low energy levels. I also look forward to being able to enjoy more of the healthy fruits and vegetables that contain high doses of potassium, such as sweet potatoes, avocados, watermelon, mangoes, and bananas (just to name a few).
