Charles Baumann thoroughly enjoyed his 25 active-duty years as a US Air Force navigator and pilot. He loved being part of a crew with an important task to perform, whether in the F-4 Phantom as a navigator or the the pilot of the C-141 Starlifter transport. Charlie also found his work with young pilots as a T-37 Instructor and his time in the USAF serving our country very satisfying.
Following his retirement, Charlie stayed at Randolph Air Force Base and flew a USAF T-43 Navigator training aircraft for 10 more years as a contract pilot. Charlie met his wonderful wife, Donna (an Air Force and DoD civilian Navy nurse), during his time in the military. They have been married for 45 years, have two children and six grandchildren, with their son’s family living in Texas and their daughter’s family living in Scotland.
In the summer of 2022, Charlie was suddenly struck with a rare autoimmune disease that irreparably damaged his kidneys, and he was quickly placed on dialysis. He has been teaching classes for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for over twenty years but has needed to reduce his hours due to his illness. With the gift of renewed health, he and Donna would love to visit their son and his family, and love to fly to Scotland to see their daughter and family again. Charlie has enlisted the help of a Veteran's organization called DOVE Transplant which is helping in his outreach to find his life-saving kidney donor. DOVE will assist all prospective donors throughout the process and make sure they do not incur any out-of-pocket expenses related to the evaluation or surgery.
